Bit 虽然拼写简单，但是它的用法不简单，特别是 a bit，而且它跟 little 和 little bit 的区别也经常让人陷入沉思。总得来说，a bit，a little 和 a little bit 大同小异，特别是在没有具体的上下文中，只是 a little 更为正式，而 a little bit 是在减少小的程度。
在遇到不定冠词 a 之前，bit 常用作名词，但是当它遇到 a 之后，a bit 具备了其他的功能了。此时它相当于一个程度副词，通常用来修饰形容词，相当于 a little，也可以修饰动词，意为“有点，稍微”，例如：
They had got a bit tired working in the garden.
他们在花园里干活有点累了。
Can you wait a bit for us? We’re in heavy traffic.
你能等我们一会儿吗？我们的交通很拥挤。
那么 a bit much 到底是一个什么样的存在呢？按照 a bit 修饰的原则，这里的 much 是一个形容词；其实 a bit much 是 a bit too much 的缩写，其中的 a bit 是修饰 too 的，而 too 修饰 much 的，就是我们常见的 too much，那么 a bit too much 的意思就是“有点太过分了“，常用作表语，例如：
Julie's mother thought that it was a bit much to expect the students to stay at school until 10 o'clock for theater practice.
朱莉的母亲认为，期望学生们在学校呆到10点去练习戏剧有点过分。
Don’t you think it’s a bit much of him to give me most of the work and then take the afternoon off?
你不觉得他把大部分工作都交给我，然后下午休息有点过分吗？
It's a bit much calling me at three in the morning.
凌晨三点钟打电话给我，有点过分了。
但是与 too much 不同的是，此时的 a bit much 不修饰名词，因此我们不能说 there is a bit much water left，因为不但意思行不通，而且 much 修饰不可数名词时常用的修饰语是 so 或 too，而不用 a bit，否则 a bit much 所表示的数量模棱两可，或者说这种表达方式的可读性很差。
需要注意的是，当 a bit 或 bits 修饰名词时，只有一种格式，那就是 a bit of 或 bits of，后面接不可数名词或单数可数名词，这也是 bit 和 little 的最主要区别之一，此时的 a bit 或 bits 属于名词范畴，例如：
Do they need a bit of help with their luggage?
他们需要帮忙拿行李吗？
There were bits of glass everywhere.
到处都是玻璃碎片。
Seven people in the car was a bit of a squeeze.
那辆车坐了七个人是有点挤。
总结一下，a bit (too) much 相当于一个形容词，但不修饰名词，通常只作表语，相当于 not fair 或 not reasonable，简单意为“过分，不合理，不应当”等，而且只有这个意思，在使用时当作一个整体就可以了。
